The Secret To Achieving Effortless Cool

Womenswear columnist for matchesfashion.com, Stacey Duguid, recently admitted that she puts "...an awful lot of effort into looking effortlessly thrown together...". And she's not alone. Achieving that 'naturally chic' look is, for most of us, anything but effortless!

In her recent article for The Style Report, she acknowledged that there are some women, such as model and TV presenter Alexa Chung and CĂ©line's Phoebe Philo, for whom effortless cool is a way of life. Often dressed in their uniform of faded boy-jeans, the perfect grey marl sweatshirt, and spectacularly oversized sunglasses, they look simultaneously undone and incredibly chic. However, as she readily admits, this laid back look is not one that we can all pull off so successfully.

On a more positive note, she does feel that there are a handful of clever women who may just have solved the 'Effortless Cool' conundrum for us mere mortals, and counts French Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt and designer Isabel Marant (below) among them...

Their uniform?  Those key pieces that form the building blocks of a great wardrobe: good-looking jeans, brilliantly cut pea coats, oversized parkas, modern day-dresses, fabulous-fitting trousers paired with neat biker jackets, luxey-sporty sweatshirts, well chosen, beautifully soft cashmere, fashion flats and a fine selection of subtle 'stealth' handbags.

With this in mind, here are Stacey's top tips to achieving effortless cool...

* Build a wardrobe based on beautiful, useful and classic key pieces.

* Aim for a style that is low-key but with attitude and emboldens the spirit.

* Shop with longevity in mind.

* Throw in the occasional quirky item, but know what to do with it!
