Closet Chameleon

Image via Pinterest

Learn the tricks of the trade. Follow Vogue Australia's online guide to all-weather dressing, with just one wardrobe...

The Midi Skirt

Cool down in the summer months with a basic tee or tank tucked into a full skirt for a demure turn. In the autumn, opt for a longer sleeve in heavier fabric, while in winter, rug up in a belted coat, beanie, boots and cashmere scarf.

Done right, dungarees are undeniably a multi-season item. Style back with a short-sleeve shirt and sandals in summer, graduating to a long-sleeve and chunky knit as the temperature drops.

The Statement Heel

This solution may not be for everyone!  The 'never wear socks with sandals' mandate has been breached by the street style set, who wear their favourite heels no matter the weather – luckily, a colour-coordinated sock is all you need.

Insta Inspiration

These are some of my favourite finds on Instagram this week.  I hope they inspire you too...

1. Photography by Hedi Slimane and Tom Goldblum as featured in Vulture Magazine. Dark and mysterious...

2. My new mantra!

3. Saint Laurent inspired handmade business cards.  I've just discovered Jeanette Getrost's work.

4. A simple minimalist office space.  If only...

5. I have a pair of Pamela Love's spike earrings, and the way they've been styled here caught my eye.

6. My love of texture extends to interiors.  I do love an exposed brick wall.

7. Leopard print.  Say no more!

8. A shot from StillWithYou's 2013 Look Book. Handmade silver jewellery that looks great worn layered together.

9. Simple.  Beautiful.

How I Styled It...

Past & Precious

Before I styled this week's windows, I had no idea that the weather was going to take such a turn for the worst!  But the beauty of this outfit that I put together, is that it can be warmed up or dressed down, depending upon whatever mother nature decides to throw at us!

The Helmut Lang black and white knit is the perfect trans-seasonal piece.  On warmer days, it can be worn alone to show off the open weave finish to its best.  But as the weather cools, a simple t-shirt worn underneath will keep the chill at bay, while adding a contrasting layer, and if a jacket is required, this super sweater is light enough to slip underneath.

The skirt is from Whistles Limited Edition collection, and not only does the smooth black leather contrast beautifully with the texture of the knit, but the A-Line style is bang on trend, as fashion takes inspiration from the sixties this season.

The black All Saints boots are suede and leather and fasten at the ankle with a strap. The suede finish adds a lightness to the boots, which means they look as good with bare legs as with a pair of opaques.  And the subtle black and white finish on the slim wedge heel complements the knit just nicely!

Perfect trans-seasonal pieces!

The Real Deal

Image via Pinterest

"...61 per cent of online users have been duped into buying fake designer goods." - Sarah Karmali,

In her recent article for Harper's Bazaar online, Sarah Karmali quizzed co-founder of Vestiaire Collective, Fanny Moizant, on how to spot a fake designer bag. Here are her top tips...

1. Check the quality of the material the bag is made from.  This can be the first give away of a counterfeit product. If the item is supposed to be leather, it should feel and smell like leather!

2. Take a close look at the hardware.  It should feel solid rather than hollow, and shouldn't chip.

3. The stitch work is another area to pay careful attention to - bad craftsmanship here is often a key giveaway. Uneven, slanted or back-and-forth stitching is a sign of a poorly made item.

4. Cheap lining is another clue to look out for - feel the quality and carefully inspect the colour. Counterfeiters often work from photos which can distort the colour tone of the lining, leading to them using the wrong shade.

5. The logo is another easy slip up area for counterfeiters. It's really all about the detail here, so make sure you're aware of the particularities of the brand logo.

6. Check the pockets; does the bag you're looking at have the correct number of pockets in the right placement for that particular model?

7. Finally, check the inner label for any discrepancies.  Is the logo centred, should there be a hologram or a serial number? If there's a serial number is it in the correct sequence?

Modern Metallics

The Observer

"Don't be afraid to sparkle." - Alice Fisher, The Observer

It doesn’t look like the light of the metallics trend will dim anytime soon. So says Alice Fisher in her recent online article for The Observer, and I certainly agree with her.

Previously consigned to evening wear, today's modern metallics are now a daytime mainstay. So if you've not yet added a touch of sparkle to your style, here are Alice's tips for embracing the metallic mood...

* The key to metallics is the finish. Avoid high-shine items if you’re not naturally dressy. Go for brushed metal or satin finishes and simple shapes.

A simple t-shirt is given added oomph with a touch of sparkle...

Past & Precious / Plein Sud Jeans

* If you just want to dip your toe in the silvery waters, then buy a pair of shiny shoes.

These perfect white pointed flats sport an on trend silver toe...

Past & Precious / Kurt Geiger

* Or, look for clothes with a metallic thread, which adds a little fun to formal clothing.

Flat Hunters

"...flats have been elevated into fashion, become much more diverse as a category, and are being worn in lots of different arenas...there are...skater shoes, slippers, trainers, sandals, brogues, espadrilles - and flats have become glamorous, too." - Adam Kelly, fashion and beauty director, Fenwick

Are you a committed high heel wearer?  In her recent article for The Telegraph online, Hannah Rochell urges us to give flat shoes a go.  And not just for the sake of our bunions, but for our fashion credentials too!

Here's Hannah's case for embracing the flat...

* There is absolutely no reason why a flat shoe can't be as beautiful as a heel, or why you can't get the same pleasure from acquiring an exquisite pair of brogues as you would from stilettos.

* Designer brands are now putting much more emphasis on their flats, rather than just throwing a couple of pairs into the collection as a half‑hearted afterthought.

* High street stores are putting more effort into the design aesthetic of their shoes, resulting in an abundance of competitively priced, on-trend styles.

As she goes on to say, "Flat-hunters have never had a greater choice than now".  So, if you've been thinking about putting your feet in flats, there's no better time like the present!

The Return Of The Dress
Christopher Kane AW14

"...the ultimate ALL-IN-ONE." -  Zara Wong, Vogue Australia

I know what you're thinking.  Did it ever go away?  But bear with me...

As Ken Downing, senior vice president of Neiman Marcus, says in Zara Wong's recent article for Vogue Australia, the one piece has "...fallen from favour for many women in an era of separates". And he does have a point.

Separates have been firmly at fashion's forefront in recent times. By creating different looks using a favourite top or skirt we can put our own stamp on an outfit. And there's the financial factor to consider too.  Cost per wear decreases much faster with a separate.

Past & Precious / Vivienne Westwood

However, what the dress lacks in initial versatility it makes up for in efficiency and speed. The effort and styling skills required for separates is much higher than with a dress. And if mixing and matching is not your forte, or like many women, including many of my clients, you have a demanding lifestyle, the ease of the dress ups its wardrobe appeal considerably.

Past & Precious / DKNY

So what's different about the dress now?  Well, gone are the days of a 'one shape for all' approach.  The era of the IT dress was declared well and truly over this season, as catwalks were dominated by one pieces united by their diversity.

Designers used texture, fabric and tailoring techniques to add variety, and there were a myriad of different shapes for different figures. So, what better season to find your perfect dress!

Polished Minimalism

BBC/Drama Republic
Maggie Gyllenhaal as Nessa Stein

Have you been watching 'The Honourable Woman', BBC2's latest serial drama? Not only has this mini series gripped viewers with its gritty storylines, but as Lauren Cochrane notes in her recent article for The Guardian, it has also become "...the latest example of Fashion TV...".

What Sophie Gråbøl's character, Sarah Lund, did for the patterned sweater in 'The Killing', Maggie Gyllenhaal's Nessa Stein is doing for the blouse.  The pussy bow has never looked so good!

BBC/Drama Republic

Nessa Stein's style, a polished version of minimalism, centres around clean lines and classic blouses, and according to's Hannah Rochell, is " us serious workwear envy."

So, if your working wardrobe needs a dose of Nessa style, one of these classic blouses will do the job just nicely...

How To...Style Your LWD

Image via Pinterest

If you're looking to breath new life into your little white dress, then here are five ways to restyle fashion's summer favourite, courtesy of's Leah Bourne...

Layered over a collared shirt
Layer your LWD over a collared shirt and you’ll have an entirely fresh outfit on your hands. And if it's really hot outside, consider a short sleeve T-shirt in a contrasting colour to achieve a similar look.

With black ankle boots
There’s no need to retire your favourite ankle boots for the summer! Pair them with a little white dress in a summery fabric, which offsets the inherent heaviness of the boots.

With brogues and a bold red lip
If you're looking for style and comfort (and who isn’t?) pair your little white dress with a pair of men's style brogues for the ultimate fashion girl look.  Add a red lip and you’ll be good to go.

Accessorized with a detachable collar
If you have a plain white dress in the back of your closet that could use an update, an easy way to do this is with a detachable collar.  It's also a great way to add a pop of colour to your outfit.

With a fedora and biker boots
Your little white dress doesn’t have to be styled to look prim and proper. How about pairing it with an oversize fedora and rough-and-tumble biker boots?

Currently in stock at Past & Precious, white dresses by Céline, Paul & Joe Sister and Collette by Collette Dinnigan.  Click here for details.
