For a more grown up take on your warm weather wardrobe, and how to get the look for less, read on...

The Secret To French Style
Brigitte Bardot

Apparently, the recipe for French chic is to ignore trends.

Women's Wear Daily recently reported that market research commissioned by the French Federation of Women’s Ready-To-Wear found that French women care less about what’s gliding down the runway or displayed in shop windows, and more about what suits them.

So, what a better excuse, as if I need one, to celebrate some true French style icons...

Ines De La Fressange

A former model, and the first to sign an exclusive contract with Chanel.  Her book 'Parisian Chic' is a lovely little read.

Betty Catroux

Catroux, left, with Yves Saint Laurent. She was his muse. Love those boots!

Audrey Tatou

The actress, looking super smart in simple black and white, was chosen to play Coco Chanel in the 2009 film.

Francoise Hardy

This singer's 'mod-ish yet nonchant' style is still influential today.

A Clean Break

Having come back from holiday with the usual mountain of washing, Jo Glynn-Smith's guide for getting the most from our dry cleaning is certainly timely!

Here are her top tips, courtesy of Harper's Bazaar online...

1. Always dry-clean each piece from a set of clothing, such as suits, at the same time. This ensures that any colour changes over time are consistent across the set.

2. Don’t dry-clean the same item of clothing too many times. The high temperatures and chemicals used eventually take their toll on the fabric.

3. If you have specific stains, always point these out to the dry-cleaner and specify what the stain is, if you know.

4. If your garment has particularly fragile buttons that could be damaged, ask your dry-cleaner to wrap them up before cleaning.

5. Always check that you are satisfied with the garments before you leave the shop – it’s much easier to complain and get items redone while you are still on the premises.

6. Do not store your clothes in the plastic bags from the dry-cleaner, as this can cause yellowing and staining. Take them out straight away.

7. After dry-cleaning, air your clothes for as long as possible before returning them to the wardrobe.

Haute In The Heat?

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley                                 Ashley Olsen                                                Jessica Alba

According to Grazia, these three A-listers should inspire us when it comes to high summer style. However, Rosie's over play with print and pattern, Ashley's 'minimal boho' and Jessica's 'pretty summer punk'(?!) have me running for the hills!

But fast forward a few pages to the magazine's regular Style Hunter feature, and these lovely ladies, snapped by the camera in Cannes, show us, and the A-listers, how it's done...

Fashion Tips & Tricks

Live a more stylish life!  Here are ten handy fashion tips courtesy of

1. Never dry a wet shoe with heat. Let it dry naturally in the open air. Heat will dry out the leather and the lifespan of the shoe will be cut in half.

2. The easiest way to make your closet look organised: Buy all the same hangers for everything – in the same colour, and same shape.

3. Looking for an easy trick to make your bare legs look longer? Try shoes in the same colour as your skin, which give give the illusion that your legs extend a few extra inches.

4. Don’t buy items you know you won’t properly care for. For example, if you know you’re never going to hand-wash that delicate cami or beaded sweater, don’t buy it!

5. Fold jeans like a pro: Lay them on a flat surface, fold them in half from left to right. Grab the stacked jean legs and fold them in half so the hem of the jeans lines up with the waistband. Fold the jeans in half once more.

6. Cut down your closet by 25% by asking yourself this one question: "If I were shopping right this second, would I buy this?" If the answer’s no, out it goes!

7. Never put a garment on immediately after ironing it, as this can actually cause new wrinkles to form. Instead, let it sit for five minutes to set the press.

8. Blot, don’t rub, when you spill something on your clothes. Wiping or rubbing will actually further ingrain the stain into the weave.

9. Revamp an old coat by swapping the buttons and having a tailor replace the lining with an eye-catching pattern or bright colour.

10. Heat can warp the frames of your glasses, so always keep them in a hard case and never wear them on your head on a hot day.

Because You're Worth It...

Image via Pinterest

'Cost Per Wear' is a concept I often talk about on the blog, and one that I firmly believe in.  Essentially, it judges the value of a garment to the wearer and her wardrobe by the number of times it's worn, rather than the initial purchase price.

In the current issue of Vogue, this simple calculation is applied to some costly but classic wardrobe staples, with some surprising results...

Cost: £6,760
Age Purchased: 50
Usage: Three days a week
Age Retired: 90
Number of Wears: 6,240
Cost per Wear: £1.08

Cost: £3,960
Age Purchased: 21st birthday present
Usage: Once a month until 30, twice a month at 30 to 50, four times a month at 50 plus
Age Retired: 90
Number of Wears: 2,508
Cost per Wear: £1.58

Cost: £1,735
Age Purchased: 40
Usage: (Seasonal) 50 days a year
Age retired: 90
Number of Wears: 2,500
Cost per Wear: £0.69

Now, while this particular exercise is rather simplistic (as Alexander Fury, Fashion Editor of The Independent, tweeted yesterday it assumes we "...never change shape..., get moths, get bored, change style...") I do think it still shows that a little number crunching when considering a purchase is always worth it.

Statistics are based on the assumption that we will live to 90, and cannot account for significant changes in weight gain or loss - Vogue
