*A grey mark T-shirt goes with everything

*You can put a biker jacket over absolutely anything

*Black and a bit of navy is better than all black.

Marc Cain AW12 Campaign

When I first saw this picture, it instantly brought to mind one of those flip books where the pages are split into three and you mix and match the different sections to create random images.  Maybe the stylist was simply left with these pieces to try and work with at the end of the shoot???

Mixing and matching different items together to create a unique, and successful, look is not easy.  In my (humble) opinion, the jacket and skirt shown here are fighting with each other, and don't get me started on the tights and boots!

In contrast, the very individual pieces in this next image work really well together...

Marc Cain AW12 Collection

The difference between styling success and failure here is in the finish and weight of the fabrics in each case.  The jacket in the first image and knit in the second seem to have been used to create the same effect - to add an edge to the skirts they have been styled with.  But while this has worked really well in the second image, the skirt in the first is simply overwhelmed by the jacket.

The leather boots and thick tights in the first image are also much too heavy for the skirt, in contrast to the suede shoes and lace socks in the second.

Very individual pieces can complement each other when worn together, but styling a successful look when the finishes (texture, detailing) clash and the weight of the fabrics don't marry will be a challenge.

Fifty Shades...

Elle Magazine

Many of my customers bemoan the onset of winter, and with it the absence of colour from their favourite stores, including Panache!

We do tend to retreat into darker shades as the days get shorter, but this doesn't mean that dressing has to be dull...

These images from the current issue of Elle show perfectly how pieces in a single sombre colour can be combined to create super stylish outfits.  The secret?  The different shades the contrasting fabrics and textures bring to each look - here the Elle team have used wool, leather, satin and denim to great effect.

So, black (or grey!) doesn't have to be boring.  All it takes is a little imagination...

The Little Black Jacket

Chanel's Little Black Jacket exhibition has finally come to London.  After showings in Tokyo, New York, Taipei and Hong Kong, the exhibition which celebrates Chanel's most iconic item opens at the Saatchi Gallery today.

The project was the brainchild of Chanel's creative director Karl Lagerfeld, and former editor of French Vogue Carine Roitfeld.  It consists of a series of photographs, taken by Lagerfeld himself, showing models, actors, musicians and other 'friends of the house' wearing the classic jacket in their own way, celebrating its versatility and timelessness.

Admission to the exhibition is free, and it runs until 28th October.

A book "The Little Black Jacket: Chanel's Classic Revisited"  accompanies the exhibition, and you can find details here

Signature Styling #3

Elle Magazine

I think I would amend the title of this feature to read 'How Not To Wear The Longer Skirt'...

Full skirts that fall below the knee can be quite difficult to style well, and the bold print of this particular piece coupled with what appears to be a heavy weight fabric simply add to the problem.

I'm not one for rigid style rules (in the world of fashion rules are definitely meant to be broken), but there is a general consensus that volume on the bottom should be balanced by a slim fit on top, and vice versa.  In my opinion, the three outfits styled here demonstrate why this is advice well worth taking.

For a much more successful take on the look, see how several of the women 'On The Street' have styled their longer skirts.  Both the oversized red and blue knits work well as the skirts in each case fit closer to their wearer's bodies.  But I think the best approach is the one taken by the woman in the middle image where she has tucked her shirt into the skirt and accessorised with a lovely wide belt.  This looks great, although it's not for the short waisted among us.  Now, that's another issue altogether...

Jaeger AW12 Collection

This image, which showcases an outfit from Jaeger's latest collection, perfectly illustrates the importance of scale and fit.

As you can probably see, the model they have styled is swamped by the cape she is wearing. Add the cowl neck knit and large slouchy bag into the mix and she really is lost in the outfit. And didn't anyone notice that the trousers are too short for her?!

In contrast, see how the same model looks in the following image...

Jaeger AW12 Collection

The slim fitting coat and simple knitted dress really suit her petite frame, and without all the fussy details she looks taller and slimmer.  The coat is also just the right length - it covers the hem of the dress, and doesn't fight with the top of the knee length boots.  Perfect!
