The Trench with a Twist!

Ann Demeulemeester

Add a touch of the avant-garde to your wardrobe with this super silk coat that's just arrived in store!

As you would expect from a piece by this Belgian designer, there is much more than meets the eye to what seems like a traditional style trench, such as the buttons hidden inside the lining which can be fastened in a myriad ways, changing the shape of the coat.

It's time to have some fun with fashion...

Signature Styling #8

The Sunday Times Style Magazine

I've had some great feedback on my last Signature post (Signature Styling #7), which took issue with this recent press article on dressing for your age.

Here's my favourite comment, which did put a smile on my face...

" I wouldn't bother to get up if I had to dress like an old lady...And I would never be without a leather jacket and I'm 61 eeeeek!!  Right now I must get on and do the ironing...wearing my skinny jeans, slightly low rise, Isabel Marant blouse and Tods trainers...for my age I should be in an M&S grannies dress and pinny!"

To balance her argument the article's author, Flossie Saunders, also listed those items she feels we can wear when we reach a certain age.  And while I also take issue with most of these as, amongst other things, they take no account of individual taste, colouring or body shape, I do wholeheartedly agree with adopting these three pieces of fashion advice, whatever your age...

* Invest in on trend bags and shoes
* Wear your good clothes - all the time
* Keep experimenting

Je Ne Sais Quoi....

French Vogue

This unassuming photo, which captures the French Vogue team at their Fashion Night Out in Paris, still managed to catch my eye.

Black and white photo notwithstanding, I think it's the fact that they all look super stylish in such simple outfits.  Most definitely a vote for the less is more approach to dressing...

The Eyes Have It

I don't make a habit of blogging about beauty products, but when something really works I like to spread the word (Pale & Interesting).

I'm a fan of the dark eye/nude lip look (Carine), but one of my biggest bugbears is that after only an hour or two of wear, the shadows start to settle in a lovely crease across my lid, which is not exactly the image I'm after.

I've tried using different shadows, and have also bought several eyeshadow primers but nothing has solved the problem, until now...

Introducing the Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base.  Despite reading some very positive online reviews, I was very sceptical when I asked the girls at SpaceNK to try this under my usual eyemake up, but after almost 12 hours of wear there wasn't a crease in sight!

Using a primer does mean that shadows can be more difficult to blend than without, but with the Nars product I've found this easier than with the other brands I've tried. And as it's clear rather than coloured, your shadows stay true to their original shade too. I'm sold!

You can find full details here.

Signature Styling #7

The Sunday Times Style Magazine

This article by Shane Watson appeared in the press a couple of weeks ago, and I've been mulling over whether to feature it on the blog ever since, as you'll see...

As part of the piece, Flossie Saunders' 'Midlife Manifesto' lists the items she feels we should cast aside when we reach a certain age.  What do you think?

* Leather jackets
* Woolly or coloured tights
* Cheap t-shirts
* Cropped and ultra low rise styles
* Skinny jeans with stretch
* Anything your teenage daughter owns
* The must have piece of the season

As those of you who know me (and my age!) are probably aware, I don't let my advancing years dictate what I wear, and I give the same advice to my clients and customers.  In my opinion, the most important factors to consider when getting dressed are whether you feel confident and comfortable in an item of clothing, closely followed by how you plan to style it, as this can make a huge difference to whether the piece is a hit or a miss.

My only words of caution in terms of age can be summed up by Ruth Chapman, the co-founder of Matches, when she says "Don't get stuck in a rut, because wearing dated styles is the most ageing thing of all".

Signature Styling #6

Matches Magazine

I'm always cautioning my clients and customers against saving certain clothes for 'best', and this great article from Matches' Autumn/Winter 2012 Magazine supports this stance too.

From a purely practical point of view, this now outdated approach to dressing is a costly one, especially in today's straitened times - think cost per wear.  But there are fashionable as well as financial reasons why a more flexible wardrobe is now the way to go...

Firstly, the line between day time dressing and night time glamour has become increasingly blurred.  Styling up a pair of jeans for an evening out and dressing down a sequinned skirt with a sweatshirt for day is now de rigeur.

Secondly, clothes should be enjoyed.  Getting dressed is an opportunity for daily reinvention, and you'll get much more pleasure from wearing your 'best' clothes than seeing them hanging in your closet.

Thirdly, and as Matches' joint CEO Ruth Chapman says "We want our daytime wardrobes to work as hard as we do...".  Why save your 'best' pieces just for special occasions when you often want to look and feel your best during the day?

If you need some further encouragement, then take inspiration from these savvy style mavens who know a thing or two about working dressed up day wear...

Statement Separates
                           Kenzo                                              Jonathan Saunders                                           Peter Pilotto

"The general idea is that every item you wear should SAY something.  In terms of putting together an outfit, it may seem scary - but a bit of effort is all you need" Victoria Moss, InStyle

For many of us, the last couple of years have been all about the dress, but separates are now once again stealing the fashion spotlight.

And as you can see from these images from the autumn/winter catwalks, this style shift is far from a return to the days of those nondescript neutral basics.  Separates are now making a serious fashion statement all of their own.

Here's a selection of the super separates we currently have in store.  Time to have some fun getting dressed!
