As many of you know, I'm rather partial to the colour black. And while this is often seen as a fail safe option when choosing what to wear, dressing head to toe in this favourite neutral can look a bit, well, flat.
So to create that essential bit of interest, I've always liked to mix different textures and finishes together, à la Ann Demeulemeester who never strays far from her preferred black palette.

The Belgian designer's catwalk collections are brought to life by the way she plays matt finishes against satin and sheer against opaque. She also uses fur, feathers and beading to quite dramatic effect.
Introducing textured pieces into your wardrobe is a great way to have fun with fashion, and not just for those of us who like to dress on the dark side(!). It's also much easier to pull an outfit together when items have different finishes, as well as being a more fashion forward way of dressing.
