Jean Genius

A few of my denim favourites...

As you can see, I do love my denim, but shopping for jeans can be quite a challenge.

Not only do we have to navigate through the sheer variety of styles, cuts and finishes on offer, but add the current vogue for colour and print into the mix and finding that perfect pair can turn into a bit of a nightmare.  However, help is at hand...

On a pre-shopping trip to London last week for one of my clients,  I was introduced to Liberty's Denim Specialist Liam O'Connor.  With Liam's expert help, picking out the styles I was keen to source for my client was a breeze.  And on the shopping day itself, his assistance and advice was second to none.  Thank you Liam!

Opposites Attract Part 2

'Haute casual' is how Elle Magazine describes the current vogue for mixing high and low pieces together to create new and unpredictable outfits.

Here, Columbine Smille shows how to perfect this 'pick 'n' mix' style of dressing ...

Columbine Smille

The Swedish fashion blogger has played opposites against each other by combining a tailored blazer with relaxed, boyfriend style jeans, and has then upscaled the distressed denim with her amazing metallic heels.

Part of the fun of fashion is creating new looks from your current wardrobe, and by blurring sartorial boundaries this more relaxed approach to dressing means that special pieces can be worn more often too.

This is one of my favourite 'haute casual' outfits which you may have seen me wearing in the shop.  Ooh, I do love a bit of daytime sparkle...

Opposites Attract Part 1

As many of you know, I'm rather partial to the colour black.  And while this is often seen as a fail safe option when choosing what to wear, dressing head to toe in this favourite neutral can look a bit, well, flat.

So to create that essential bit of interest, I've always liked to mix different textures and finishes together, à la Ann Demeulemeester who never strays far from her preferred black palette.
Ann Demeulemeester SS12

The Belgian designer's catwalk collections are brought to life by the way she plays matt finishes against satin and sheer against opaque.  She also uses fur, feathers and beading to quite dramatic effect.

Introducing textured pieces into your wardrobe is a great way to have fun with fashion, and not just for those of us who like to dress on the dark side(!).  It's also much easier to pull an outfit together when items have different finishes, as well as being a more fashion forward way of dressing.

Here are some detailed shots from the spring/summer collections which show how combining different fabrics and finishes can make a real style statement...
                 Christopher Kane                                                   Chanel                                                          Fendi

The Art of Effortless Dressing

Emmanuelle Alt                                    Claudia Winkleman                                 Kate Bosworth

I very much admire these three super stylish women - they each have their own unique sense of dressing, but all share a keen eye for what suits them.

For a lucky few, looking perfectly pulled together does seem to come naturally, but you don't have to be born with a great sense of style to look good.  Effortless dressing is an art which can be mastered.  The essential first step is to find your own personal style...

Be inspired
While adopting someone else's look will say more about them than it does about you, taking inspiration from how others dress is a great way to help you develop your own personal style.

Tame the trends
Don't be a slave to fashion.  Looking up to date doesn't mean dressing head to toe in the latest trends.  Instead, seek out those key pieces that will give you the look and feel of the season without compromising your own individual style.

Know your limits
We all have our own fashion boundaries.  Feeling comfortable and confident in what we wear is essential to looking effortlessly dressed, so avoid those pieces that fall outside your sartorial comfort zone.

The personal touch
Real style is about how we wear our clothes rather than the garments we actually wear. Invest in some flexible foundation pieces that can be dressed up or down, together with some well chosen accessories, and you will be able to create a variety of looks that are undeniably yours.

Love your look
If a particular look works well for you, keep wearing it.  A well-edited wardrobe of real favourites, rather than a closet crammed full of clothes you will quickly tire of, will render those dressing dilemmas a thing of the past!

If you would like to learn more about booking a one to one styling session then do pop in and see me at the shop, or click here for my personal contact details.

Here at the shop we have just taken delivery of this fabulous fifties style dress...

And fifties fashion is currently being celebrated at Selfridges, where the store is hosting 'Big Britannica 1951-1953' as part of its Big British Bang event.

Crazy for Paisley

Elle Magazine

Fashion's print revolution shows no signs of floundering, but if feminine florals aren't for you there is a more edgy alternative.

Paisley was given a modern makeover this spring.  At Jil Sander, creative director Raf Simons turned to the traditional print to update the label's sleek, minimalist style while maintaining its slightly androgynous aesthetic.

Paisley was also the print of choice for many other designers this season...

Total Wardrobe Care

This month sees the start of the dreaded moth season, so it's time to take action against those pesky pests!

Here at the shop we stock the Total Wardrobe Care range of anti-moth products, a beautifully scented and naturally organic range made from a unique blend of essential oils.

Prices start from just £3 for an infused drawer sachet, and here are details of the products we have in store...

Moth Box
The adhesive strip inside the box is impregnated with the female pheromone,  so it attracts the male moths who stick to it and therefore breaks the breeding cycle.  Moth boxes are effective for twelve weeks after opening.

Natural Anti-Moth Linen Spray
This linen spray has been specially formulated to protect garments against moths and keep wardrobes fresh.  The wonderful fragrance also makes the perfect anti-moth room spray.

Anti-Moth Drawer & Hanging Sachets
These sachets are made from a blend of essential oils in a natural stone powder base. Once opened, they will release a natural, anti-moth fragrance which will protect wardrobes and drawers for approximately six months.

Natural Anti-Moth Candle
This hand-blended natural soya candle repels moths by diffusing its blend of essential oils to protect wardrobe and bedroom areas, keeping them fresh, fragrant and free of moths.  It will burn for approximately 30 hours.

And as well as protecting current season clothes, these essential anti-moth products can be used to protect garments that you want to store away, and they also make great gifts.

Pop into the shop and pick up your clothes protectors today!

Runway to Reality Part 2

The catwalk is home to many wearable clothes.  Next time you're flicking through a magazine or surfing the style sites, take a closer look at the individual pieces the models are wearing, rather than how their outfits have been styled.

It's much more fashion savvy to style a piece your own way, than to lift an entire look straight from the runway, so think about how you would incorporate an individual piece into your own wardrobe.

I recently bought this Isabel Marant tie dye top, which was styled with clashing prints on the catwalk...

                                                                    Isabel Marant SS12

But I would style it with these pieces from my wardrobe...

Skinny Jeans / Gap
Biker Boots / Laurence Dacade
Suede & Metal Belt / Mango
